Doctors Told to Screen All Adult Patients for Unhealthy Drinking Habits

Will your next visit to the doctor include a "drinking checkup?"

It will if your primary care physician heeds new guidelines recommended Tuesday by the United States Preventive Services Task Force.

According to CNN, the group is suggesting that "all adults, including pregnant women, should be screened for unhealthy alcohol use by their primary care physicians" and that those patients who drive more than the recommended amounts be given "brief counseling to help them reduce their drinking."

So how much drinking is too much these days?

For 21-to-64-year-old men, that means no more than four drinks in a single day and 14 drinks in a week, according to National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism.

For women and older men, it's a maximum of three drinks daily and no more than seven drinks a week.
