Lady Gaga's Mom Details The Singer's Early Bullying Experience

Lady Gaga's mother, Cynthia Germanotta, is sharing her side of the bullying and subsequent depression that her daughter experienced in middle school.

Sitting down for Today's "Through Mom's Eyes" series, Germanotta detailed the struggles that a young Stefani endured because of her unique presence. "In middle school, because she was unique, she started experiencing a lot of struggles," she explained at the family's New York restaurant, Joanne Trattoria. "You know, feeling isolated from events. Humiliated. Taunted. And she would start to question herself and become doubtful of her own abilities. And that’s when she developed depression.”

Germanotta went on to admit that she and her father, Joe, tried to do their best but they didn't know everything that was going on. "We tried our best as parents to help her, but we didn't know everything. I felt where I made mistakes was I didn’t really know the warning signs to look for," she added.

Back in 2012, Cynthia and Gaga launched the Born This Way Foundation to offer mental health support for young people, so that they could be "better equipped to deal with her struggles than she was," as per Cynthia.

Gaga has been candid about her hardships with mental health and, most recently, told Oprah that she is tackling the crisis head on. "I want mental health to be its own class," the singer told Oprah about her commitment to adding mental health first aid to schools across the country. “What is health class, sex ed? Is that what we're still doing? We should be learning about the brain and the heart, and the mind and the body and its connection and all the things. I want there to be someone in every school that someone can go to if they're in need of help, or that someone can go to if they see that someone else needs help. At the same time, it [should be] a requirement in every school that you learn about the importance of kindness, about triggers, and you learn about depression."
